A torrent is a way of downloading files over the internet. Torrents are often used to distribute pirated content, but they can also be used for legitimately distributing large files so as not to overload servers. The word "torrent" is related, via French tʁerent or tʁeraint, to the Latin tōrēns (meaning "overflowing"). The word originates from Latin roots meaning "to break". A torrent can refer to any program that distributes large files over the Internet, but most people use it in reference to BitTorrent. BitTorrent was one of the first peer-to-peer (P2P) protocols for sharing and transferring computer files online. The protocol was birthed as a Ph.D. project at the University of Kiowa, as a way for p2p filesharing programs to transfer large files efficiently. Its inventor, Bram Cohen designed it as a distributed method to download large files from the web more quickly by downloading parts of the file from multiple users simultaneously. This means that one person can download a file without it being stored on a single computer, and instead is stored on multiple servers across the world. A single server can distribute pieces of many different files at once, and it also means that someone who shares a file is also serving up parts of other people's files with it. BitTorrent is now one of the most widely used protocols for distributing large files. However, it is also one of the most widely distributed technologies ever. It has become so widely used that it has claimed the lives of several otherwise law-abiding citizens. Though howling was not authorized, BitTorrent's protocol didn't require authorization for its users to download copyrighted content, and copyright holders have taken advantage of this fact to accuse their adversaries of illegally downloading copyrighted materials. This means that the anonymous sharing that the protocol encourages can be taken advantage of by anyone who downloads a torrent file or uses a torrent search engine. The number of people using BitTorrent to download pirated content has profoundly impacted the entertainment industry. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) is one of the major proponents of anti-piracy legislation in the United States. The RIAA relies on lawsuits against individual file sharers, but it has also used the Digital millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) to sue torrent search engines like TorrentSpy, Torrentz and IsoHunt. EBaum's World was sued by Viacom for hosting "thousands" of infringing videos on its video sharing site, which was shut down in 2007 after a $110 million settlement with Viacom. A Beastie Boys song was removed from download sites by the recording company during the legal battle. The RIAA was also involved in a lawsuit against Myspace which led to Myspace permanently shutting down its MP3 search engine, Vitasearch. The Copyright Directive is an EU anti-piracy effort that targets torrent sites and their users in Europe. The directive has been criticized by the Tor project for making it more difficult for Europeans to anonymously access information online, and in many cases it has criminalized simple downloading of copyrighted material. However, there is some talk of changing this in later drafts of the directive. cfa1e77820
